Take Iron Mountain Road To Mount Rushmore (#647)

Iron Mountain Road: “In only 17 miles the road has 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 tunnels and 3 pigtails, turns which loop over their own road.” (by way of a bridge)

Heading up through Custer State Park to Mount Rushmore is the Iron Mountain Road.  Signs along the way say 20 to 30 miles per hour (mph).  Hah!  What optimists!  Try 10 to 15 mph.

After driving it and oh, I did love it, I nicknamed it the Twisted Sister.   In the 17 miles from bottom to top, I do not recall any stretch of straight road.

And, the view of Mount Rushmore through the eye of the first tunnel: wondrous and inspiring.

Once there, the Presidential Trail is a must.  A nice workout with its 422 stairs that go up and down amd around the base of the mountain as they lead under the facades of the great presidents above.

Right Under Their Noses

This next one is my favorite.  A trick of lighting or maybe the angle of my camera makes it look like Teddy is smiling.

Mount Rushmore is just one small part of the Black Hills…where artists use mountains of granite as their canvas.
