Soaring The Skies With The Condors (#148)

I am on the road traveling this week.  My journey is taking me south through the endlessly large state of California.  I realize how far I have come in my traveling mind-set since 2007 when I began this “extended road trip.”

Then, it was nothing for me to drive 300 to 400 miles a day just to get where I was going. Now I look at anything over 150 miles as a lot of miles to go in just one day. There’s just so much to see and experience.

Three days ago I alternated between swimming in a pool at Bakersfield Palms RV Park and sitting in a whirling water hot tub. It was great; hot tub, cool pool. I had both all to myself even though it was a very busy park.

Those events were my personal rewards for a very long 3 days since I departed from Caspar Beach.

My first stop was at Marin RV just ouside Frisco. It’s right along the freeway; noisy but a nice stop-over park with level sites.

I walked to a Trader Joe’s a block and a half away.  It was my first ever visit to a Trader Joe’s. I thought it was like a TJMaxx. It’s not! It’s an insanely crazy grocery store with shoppers who act like they are speed-shopping for a million dollar prize.

Their kids all have tiny shopping carts which they race up and down the aisles. I thought I was in a munchkin land movie gone terribly wrong.

My next stop was Pinnacles National Monument way out in the boondocks where those huge, gigantic, enormous (am I being redundant?) almost-extinct California Condors are making a comeback.

They are raised from egg to young condor-ette by biologists in a special program that uses mama look-alike hand puppets to feed the chicks. That way they don’t attach to the humans. They are released in places with spiring mountains; their natural habitat.

I spotted one way up in the sky and took a picture knowing it would only be a speck on the photo. No matter! I was elated just being there; feeling like I was up there gliding on a thermal alongside them.

When I left Pinnacles the next morning before sunrise it was after taking a shower in the park’s coin-operated showers……in the dark (. But the water was good and hot and I left some quarters as a pay-it-forward gesture before driving on.

Happy and safe travels to all!

Those mountains out your window look like a fluffy brown blanket. All soft and inviting. Mmmm hot tub and pool – lucky you. Safe journey my friend. Looking forward to hearing of your new adventures.
